Each needs a different approach, and a bathroom design that would look right in a Warndon new-build would look badly out of place in a Georgian property on Britannia Square.

In Worcester's period homes, the objective is usually a bathroom that reads as sympathetic but performs as modern. That means keeping cornice, skirting profiles and original doors where they exist, choosing a suite with traditional proportions, and hiding the modern engineering completely — concealed cisterns, valves chased in, underfloor heating instead of a modern panel radiator fighting a period room. Done properly, it looks like it has always been there.

The practical constraint in older Worcester property is nearly always the floor and the walls. Lath-and-plaster walls won't take heavy tiling without overboarding first, and original floorboards flex more than modern decking — tile straight onto them and the grout cracks within a season. We overboard walls where required and lay a decoupling membrane or ply-and-board build-up on timber floors before any tiling starts. It's invisible work, and it's the difference between a bathroom that still looks perfect in ten years and one that doesn't.

Worcester's flood-conscious riverside properties are worth a separate mention. In houses near the Severn we specify moisture-tolerant build-ups on ground-floor bathrooms — cement board rather than plasterboard low down, and materials that will survive a wetting rather than needing full replacement. It costs slightly more up front and homeowners in those streets almost always want it once it's explained.
